Integrating TeamSTEPPS into Medical Interpreting

0.8 IMIA CEUs

“Patient Safety” is the buzzword in healthcare and “TeamSTEPPS” is the buzzword in interpreting. At the 2015 IMIA Congress, the keynote speaker Dr. Green discussed the idea of “speaking safety” when educating healthcare providers on the importance of using qualified interpreters and working with them as professional interpreters. But how? There is a delicate fine line between “speaking safety” and maintaining the professional boundaries of a medical interpreter. The TeamSTEPPS videos are exciting but misleading. This workshop will show and teach you the framework and spirit of TeamSTEPPS and how to integrate this valuable communication framework appropriately into the professional activities of medical interpreters.

Why do I need CEUs?

The National Board requires recertification every 5 years to promote professional development for Certified Medical Interpreters. The recertification requirements have been developed to promote maintenance of the skills and knowledge required for competent medical interpretation and to provide an opportunity for interpreters to strengthen and expand their knowledge and skills. To achieve this purpose continuing education units are only accepted for training directly related to medical interpretation.

  • In order to maintain your certification, you need to complete 3 CEUs (Continuing Education Units), equivalent to 30 contact hours of approved training before the credential's expiration date (5 years from initial CMI date of certification). Each CEU is equal to 10 contact hours of training by most organizations. For example, a typical conference day is 0.6 CEUs.
