Say Hello to the New Blood: September Cycle Students Survived the Training

September 15th, 2015

Kudos to our September cycle students who survived this intensive 5-day training! "It has been a great training experience. I think I made the right choice of attending it. The training was planned well with the content and the guest speakers. It not only gave us the knowledge of interpreter, but ways to enter this field. I was very tired, but also feeling accomplished," says Dr. Zhang.

Special thanks to our guest speakers: Mr. Josue Rubio, Operations Recruiter from Cyracom Language Solutions; Ms. Giselle Ingram-Lopez, Senior Patient Navigator at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center; Dr. Barry Smith (and his skeleton), Attending Physician at St. Francis Hospital; Mr. Glenn Zuraw, Language Access Coordinator at Elmhurst Hospital; and Ms. Silvina de la Iglesia, Administrator of the Language Assistance Program at MediSys Health Network who gave us a multidisciplinary insight into the industry.

See behind the Scene: How Does EMS Work?

September 25th, 2015

Interpreting in the emergency room is terrifying, and the best way to overcome the fear is to go behind the scene. On September 23rd, our graduates Lulu and Shirley visited the command center of Empress EMS in the City of Yonkers and the Emergency Service Unit of the Yonkers Police Department, they also sat in the call audits offered to paramedics and were immersed in tons of valuable medical information.

What is the difference between an EMT and a paramedic? What is inside a BLS or an ALS ambulance? Where is patient sent to when 911 is called? What is the difference between a facial droop from Bell's palsy and the one from stroke? What do the police department do when there is a disaster? Lulu and Shirley can tell you all about it. "This tour is so valuable and informative. I was impressed by all the equipment they can deploy in response to accidents and disasters. It made me reflect on the explosion in Tianjin, China. A lot of young lives could have been saved if they were also equipped like this, "says Lulu.

The 2nd picture was taken on the Medical Evacuation Transportation Unit at Yonkers Police ESU. This unique "bus" is the only unit in the U.S. that has the ability to not only transport but also treat up to 18 patients at the same time.

Entercomm New Workshop Approved by IMIA for 0.8 CEUsIntegrating TeamSTEPPS into Medical Interpreting

September 24th, 2015

"Patient Safety" is the buzzword in healthcare and "TeamSTEPPS" is the buzzword in interpreting. At the 2015 IMIA Congress, the keynote speaker Dr. Green discussed the idea of "speaking safety" when educating healthcare providers on the importance of using qualified interpreters and working with them as professional interpreters. But how? There is a delicate fine line between "speaking safety" and maintaining the professional boundaries of a medical interpreter. This workshop will show and teach you the framework and spirit of TeamSTEPPS and how to integrate this valuable communication framework appropriately into the professional activities of medical interpreters.
